Student Leader's favourite games
In March 2017, 78 students from Move Well Eat Well Award schools across the state participated in Student Leadership sessions, facilitated by the Hobart Hurricanes.
Students reported back on their favourite activity at the end of the session, which we are pleased to share with other schools.
Try these two activities at your school!
Bean Bag Bingo
Space needed
- Large space
- Indoor or outdoor
What you will need
- Hoops, cones or spots
- Beanbags
How to play
- Set up a large space like a netball court with an equal number of hoops in both goal thirds and a number of bean bags in the center third.
- Divide the players into two teams. Each begins from behind the baseline of their goal third.
- On 'Go', all team members run to collect a beanbag and return to behind the baseline or sidelines of their third.
- Students then throw their ban bag, aiming for it to land inside one of the hoops. If they are successful the beanbag stays, if they are unsuccessful students run to collect another beanbag from either the center third or their goal third and try again, but must throw from behind the base or sidelines.
- When each hoop has a beanbag inside, the team calls "Bingo"
More challenging option
Use smaller targets like upturned cones and vary the throwing style, underarm, overarm, swap arms.
For small spaces
Create a mini netball court in the classroom using masking tape on the floor. Use pieces of paper instead of hoops and replace running with jumping.

Move it or Lose it
Space needed
- Medium to large space
- Indoor or outdoor
What you will need
- 2 beach balls
- Stress balls or tennis balls (1 for each pair)
- 8 cone markers
How to play
- Mark out two playing spaces with cones, with a start line at one end and a goal line at the other. Place the beach balls in the middle of each playing space.
- Divide the players into two teams and ask each team to form pairs. Give each pair in each team a stress/tennis ball. Each pair decides who will go first and stands at the start line (roller standing at the line with the ball, partner standing behind them).
- On the signal 'Move it' the rollers roll their tennis balls at the beach ball in their playing space, trying to move the beach ball towards the goal line.
- Once all the balls have been rolled the leader calls 'STOP!', allowing the roller to move into the space, collect their ball and roll it back to their partner. The pair then swap roles and repeats step 3 onward.
- The first team to get their beach ball past the goal line wins.
More challenging option
Have the teams move the beach ball to the goal line and then back to the start line to win.
For small spaces
The two playing spaces don't have to be side by side - they can be in different areas of the classroom. Use masking tape to mark out the spaces. Have players kneel instead of stand.
