Fisherman's Net (Outdoor)

thanks to Alana Binns while at Evandale Primary School

Similar to 'Octopus' but when people are tagged they become part of the 'net'.

  1. Designate a playing space and select 4 students to become a Fisherman's Net, linked by the hand.
  2. The 'Net' stands in the middle of the playing space and the remaining students become 'fish' who stand at one end of the room.
  3. On 'Swim fish' the fish have to try and get to the other side of the room without being caught by the Net. The Net tries to catch the fish, they must hold hands at all times.
  4. When a fish is caught a new net is made.

Hot Potato (Indoor /Outdoor –large space)

thanks to Kelly Dixon while at Holy Rosary Catholic School

  1. Ask students to form a class circle (or smaller circles, minimum of 5) and give a ball to one student to start passing.
  2. On 'Go', using a passing skill from a favorite sport, students pass randomly around and across the circle.
  3. When the whistle sounds, the person holding the 'hot potato' must pass off then run a lap outside the circle, return to their spot and continue.
  4. When students get the hang of this, the teacher may blow the whistle more frequently, sending many students running at one time.
  5. The aim is to pass the 'hot potato' quickly and not be caught with it when the whistle goes.

Golden Child (Netball or basketball court)

thanks to Nicole White while at St Aloysius Catholic College

  1. In a basketball or netball court split students in two groups.
  2. One group lines up in front of the goal ring, they are the throwers.
  3. The other team lines up on the side of the court, they are the runners.
  4. The runners go one at a time. They are aiming to get as far around the court as possible, before a goal is scored, ultimately trying to make a 'home run'.
  5. Throwers are having one shot at a time.
  6. When a goal is scored the runner must stop where they are.
  7. The runners nominate a 'golden child'. When this person runs, they are able to collect the runners who have been stopped on the way.
  8. Teams swap when all runners have had a turn.
  9. The winning team is the one that scores the most 'home runs'.

Equipment:

Ball and netball or basketball goal ring.

Netball or basketball court.

Sardines (Outdoor only)

thanks to Kelly Dixon while at Holy Rosary Catholic School

This game is basically a backwards version of 'Hide and Seek'.

  1. Define the boundaries within which students must remain in your playing space.
  2. Instruct two students to go and hide while the rest of the class hide their eyes and count.
  3. The challenge then is to find the two hiding students and join them in their hiding spot.
  4. Eventually the whole class will be hiding, like sardines, together in one spot.
  5. The first two students to find the hiders, become the hiders in the next round.

Best for Upper Primary.

Ace Chase (Indoor / Outdoor large space)

  1. Designate a playing space (a netball court or similar where boundaries are defined is best).
  2. Divide group into two teams (Chasers and Card Holders
  3. Each member of card holding team has a playing card (one member has the Ace). On 'Go', the chasing team tries to track down the 'Ace' in as short a time possible by tagging individual members of the card team. Once tagged, the runner must reveal their card. If it is not the 'Ace' the chaser runs to tag another card holder and the tagged player can run on.
  4. Card members may swap cards as they run. Once the 'Ace' is found the runners call "ACE" (or often "FOUND IT") and the time stops.
  5. Teams can swap roles or have a number of turns before swapping, each time trying to find the 'Ace ' in as short a time possible.

Equipment:

Bibs, pack of cards, stopwatch or timer.

Space needed:

Large space either indoor or outdoor.

Cone Tag (Indoor /Outdoor –large space)

Designate a running area.

  1. Select two students to be taggers. The rest become runners. Give a cone to each runner.
  2. On 'Go' the runners move around the area with their cones, trying to avoid being tagged by the taggers.
  3. When caught, students place their cone in the centre of the space and then turn into a tagger.
  4. The aim is to try and be the last class member still holding a cone. Reset with two new starting taggers and class members retrieve a cone from the middle.

Equipment:

30 x cones

Run and Touch (Outdoor only)

thanks to Lisa Nichols while at Mount Stuart Primary School

Designate a playing area and explain to students that the aim of the game is to touch named objects.
eg: 'Run and touch 1 flying fox, 2 swings, 2 fences, 1 slide and the blue climbing frame.'

  1. Have students run and touch various obstacles before returning to a starting point.
  2. The number of things children have to touch can vary depending on age.

Mix it Up:

Vary the mode of travel – skipping, sidestepping, hopping

Crocodile (Indoor/Outdoor - large space)

thanks to Alana Binns while at Evandale Primary School

  1. Designate a space as a 'river' and select a child to be the 'crocodile' who sits in the river.
  2. The remaining students stand on one side of the river and chant "crocodile, crocodile can we cross your river, if not, why not, what's your favourite colour?" to which 'the crocodile' responds with a colour. If a child is wearing that colour they can show it to the crocodile and cross the river safely. If not, they wait for the crocodile to say 'go' and they have to try and cross the river without being tagged.
  3. The first person tagged becomes the new 'crocodile'.

Flush The Loo (Indoor – small or large space)

  1. Designate a space and select two students as taggers, the rest are runners.
  2. On 'Go' the runners run around and when caught (by one or two bibbed taggers) they must pose in the shape of a loo – bended knee with one hand up as if wanting to ask a question.
  3. To be freed, a classmate must pretend to sit on the loo (back on and legs astride the bended knee) and 'flush' by pulling down on the extended arm. Once completed, both students continue running, hopefully before being tagged, in which case both students must pose as a loo and wait for someone to 'flush'.

World Cup Soccer (Outdoor - large space)

thanks to Gayle Skirving while at Hillcrest Primary School

  1. A great activity to keep students active during winter and take advantage of this year's World Cup Soccer (or any soccer promotion happpening locally).
  2. Students opt into a number of World Cup teams that have played each other during lunchtimes.
  3. Student leaders have been responsible for the organisation and umpiring.
  4. World Cup Soccer (or similar) could also be used in DPE, 6 a side and class vs class.

Infants Boot Camp (Indoor/Outdoor - large space)

thanks to Nicky Wakefield while at St Mary's College Junior School

  1. One of the rotations we have for our infants is "Boot Camp" and this works very well.
  2. Set up a circuit involving running, stair climb (run up; walk down), hop scotch jumps, basketball bounces, balance along a plastic snake thing and hoop jumps.

Equipment:

What ever you have – activities can vary depending on equipment available.

Design an Obstacle Course (Outdoor - large space)

thanks to Lisa Nichols while at Mount Stuart Primary School

  1. Design an obstacle course using the properties of different equipment. eg monkey bars for upper body strength, platforms can be used for step-ups, jogging around the outside of the playground for fitness.
  2. Have students start at different parts of the course so there is not much wait time.
  3. A leader should be at each start area and lead the groups around.
