Involving families and the community in Move Well Eat Well

There are a range of ways to seek family and community involvement including:

  • ­Engage families in your promotional events and special days - ask them for input and invite them along.

  • Seek family involvement in service gardens or community gardens as are an excellent way of involving your families and community from development stage through to managing and harvesting.

  • Create a one-page version of your services Move Well Eat Well policy that is easy for all families to access. The 'We are a Member Service' newsletter may be perfect to let families know what you are striving to achieve.

  • Include articles on key health messages in your service newsletter. Under each icon message on this website there are a range of newsletter inserts.

  • Set up attractive and informative noticeboard displays. Distribute tip sheets or pamphlets.

  • Organise guest speakers for family evenings to talk about nutrition and active play. You can email the Move Well Eat Well team for suggestions. Email us for ideas

  • Share information with families about the foods their child is trying or enjoying or the physical activities the child is participating in. Also gather information about what they like at home, for example new foods they may have tried with the family.

  • Include pamphlets and easy to read information on healthy eating and active play if your service has a family library.

  • Have a photo album of the children involved in having healthy meals and snacks and playing actively.

  • Ensure families from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds have access to your policies in a visual format – why not have a poster with the key points translated and use photos to show what the service is promoting.

  • Ensure all stakeholders are involved when your service develops a new policy, evaluates and reviews

  • Promote your policy of healthy eating and active play at enrolment and continue promotion throughout the year.
